Daughter

Building a strong bond with my parents and in-laws, learning from their experiences, and maintaining family traditions. My husband’s grandfather was the personal doctor of Tagore. My father- in-law was the first person who started the Haringhata milk booth. My mother-in-law was a great artist, interior decorator and had a hobby of collecting different kinds of things in and around the world and displaying them around the house. Her personal collections of crockery were mesmerizing. Her culinary was so exotic and unique that l follow each one of them and continue the legacy of the Dey family.

Sisterhood

Supporting and caring for my siblings, sharing memories, and creating lifelong connections.

Wifedom

Partnering with my spouse, more than 30 years older than me, building a life together, and navigating life's challenges as a team. Our Journey

Mitali Signifying Friendship has been the Dey Family home for fifty-five years, and has been transformed into a homestay for the last fifteen. Mitali was the first homestay in Shantiniketan. The Mitali homestay hosts are Krishno Dey and Sukanya Ray.

Krishno’s parents, Sushil and Indira bought four bighas of land called phooldanga, from the then zamindars of taltor village in 1964. Sushil has just retired from the United Nations as UN Under Secretary General and Indra studied sculpture. The family belonged to the Brahmo Samaj .

Sushil and Indira married in 1929. Sushil studied under Harold Laski at the London School of Economics and joined the Indian Civil Service (ICS) and Indira Studied at the JJ School of Art. Krishno was the youngest of the four siblings. His two older brothers Partha and Shantanu went into the Armed Services, Anuradha, an artist and restorer, lived in Italy.

Both families of Sushil & Indira have noted lineages

Indira’s maternal grandfather was Dr. Dwijendranath Maitra who was the eye surgeon to Rabindranath Tagore. He accompanied Tagore to London, staying with William Rothenstein, the noted artist and philanthropist and on the visit that Tagore was awarded the Nobel prize.

Sushil’s grandfather was Bipin Pal, the noted early Nationalist Bipin Pal was one of a trio Lal (Lala Lajpat Rai), Bal (Bal Gangadhar Tilak), Pal (Bipan Pal). They faced their biggest challenge in the Bengal partition of 1905 when the then Viceroy, Lord Curzon attempted to partition Bengal Provinces along communal lines.

Krishno spent his career in the United Nations and worked in several different UN agencies, including the UNDP AND UN Volunteers. He decided to take early retirement and come back to Shantiniketan so that he could engage in grassroot work.

Sukanya’s father was a professor in English at Viswa Bharati. That's why, she even studied in Viswa Bharati completing Master’s in Philosophy and then going on to complete a Fashion Designing course from Kolkata. From Sukanya’s childhood days, she saw her grandmother making all types of dresses for the family. It was always her dream to showcase her ideas and imaginations through the rich Indian weaves. Also followed her husban's instruction that the designs should be timeless, comfortable and beautiful.

Since her husband be in UNDP for many years and travelled all over the world experiencing Hospitality and various cuisines became a stepping stone to curate Mitali Homestay.

“Our Cats, Our Family”

Mitali has a very large garden and open space with rescued many cats, and feed them regularly. Pets are our true friends in good times and bad times and having pets around feels very complete and satisfied.

We open our gate for all the animal lovers who love their furry friends but restrained to travel with them.

Amazing storyline of our favourite Cats like my own kids. Malai, Chomchom and Jilipi were born here on 23rd of Jan 2024, under the quilt, while Krishno was watching TV. Now Jilipi is a mother of two kittens, Kalo and Jam.
